Christina Bothwell Ceramic + Cast Glass Sculptures

Christina Bothwell creates fantastic and strangely compelling figurative sculptures, which range from fascinating to disturbing. She studied painting under Will Barnett at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, but gradually moved to working three-dimensionally using ceramics and cast glass as well as antique toys, taxidermy animals or small furniture parts. Bothwell’s pieces are often a union between her own mythology and lucid dreams. They allow us to enter into a fertile subconscious and reveal a vulnerability we may recognize as our own.

VICTOR'S WAY SCULPTURE PARK: A Contemplative Garden Gallery

Victor's Way is a private park in the village county of Wicklow, Ireland, with a vast array of bizarre attractions and creepy sculptures. The outside sculpture gallery was founded by owner, Victor Langheld, who was born in Berlin, traveled around the world and lived with different religious orders in Thailand, Japan and Sri-Lanka. When he settled in Ireland, he sponsored the construction of this park and designed 24 granite and 3 bronze sculptures himself. During his travels, Victor spent a lot of time on contemplating the meaning of life and getting acquainted with various philosophical approaches and cultural traditions. Hence, the sculptures in the garden are designed in a way that calls one to contemplate about the meaning of the world or the sculptures themselves.

Victor’s Way is not a fun park for families. Ideally chatty companions, children and dogs, all of which disrupt the peace and quiet of the contemplative ambience, are asked not to be brought. Here the use of mobile phones (save for photography) is an absolute no-no. Ideally the visitor should slow down to half or quarter normal walking speed. Ideally the visitor should sit down on the benches provided and absorb into his or her inner (future, hence perfect) world and/or the serene forest atmosphere.

Philip Jackson Royal Court Bronze Sculptures

Philip Jackson is a contemporary Scottish artist known for his bronze sculptures depicting life-sized elongated figures. “My sculptures are essentially an impressionistic rendering of the figure. Where you see the figure seemingly grow out of the ground, the texture resembles tree bark, rock, or lava flow,” he’s said of his work. “As the eye moves up the sculpture, the finish becomes gentler and more delicately worked, culminating in the hands and the mask, both of which are precisely observed and modeled.” Born on April 18, 1944 in Inverness, United Kingdom, he studied at the Farnham School of Art. His larger than life figural works, can found in public squares in cities across the United Kingdom. In 2009, he was appointed Commander of the Royal Victorian Order by Queen Elizabeth II. The artist currently lives and works in West Sussex, United Kingdom.

ESCAPE INTO REALITY (WHAT DOES A PAINTING THINK?) by Michal Trpak

ESCAPE INTO REALITY (WHAT DOES A PAINTING THINK?)
(2007, Cement, Acrylic, Wood)

Escape into reality is a combination of a painting, a relief and a sculpture, it outlines a transition between real and virtual world, between 2d and 3d form, between sensed and tangible ... Is it possible for a form to be able to think something or convey a message...and if there is no direct message, is it possible for it to contemplate itself? Reflection on fine art which finds in a situation when it tries shocking in order to be spotted or makes an effort to walk out to reach a looker – on in the streets because an onlooker tends to attend galleries still less and less frequently. This way galleries, except the most prestigious ones, become sort of "art cemeteries" where only the relatives or closest ones come to see it. What in fact an art is and where its boundaries are if there are any? Art used to be rather craft in past, more than anything else... Only the last century upgraded artists and attributed particular magical secrecy and nobleness to them... Art tries to be new and discovering, so is an artist a scientist or an inventor? Modern art is a conceptual one and it can seldom defend itself, so does it make an artist a rhetorician or a philosopher? If art needs a form to convey an idea, should an artist be a skillful craftsman? If art is supposed to be digital, is an artist due to be an expert on information technologies? Is an artist a diplomat or a strategist who can present nothing like something and make the viewers believe in it? Who actually is still an artist and who is not? As long as an artist can be all and exercise anything, why everybody is not an artist? Will any object become a piece of art being exhibited in a gallery and will a person who places an object in a gallery become an artist? What is then the purpose of art? – To convey an idea or draw attention by means of a special, ingenious or more sophisticated form to things around us? Or should art be made use of as an aesthetic supplement and is more likely to be the design? If art is supposed to be another form of communication, does it need any commentary? Or – is art something what is useless and that´s why there are galleries to make it usable? As it is difficult to find a boundary between real and virtual, it is impossible to limit the art. I don´t know what a painting thinks about itself if it does think anything at all, nor I know if form is important for art. Supposing there is no form, energy, which can be turned into form, remains ......... Boundaries don´t exist...............

UNKNOWN CREATURE by Ceramics Artist and Painter Sarah Duyer

UNKNOWN CREATURE (2014, White Stoneware)
by San Francisco-based Ceramics Artist and Painter, Sarah Duyer

“Ceramics as a medium is kind of tricky to classify, since it’s still stuck in the debate of whether it should be considered a fine art or a craft. I think with this project I really wanted to utilize my knowledge of traditional forms and techniques and challenge the idea that the two have to be separate. I wanted to alter the tradition and explore the relationship we have with the ceramic pieces that we interact with on a daily basis.”

Grace Lang "TRUE CUTS" at Gristle Gallery, Brooklyn NY

Contemporary Artist and Illustrator, Grace Lang brings her colorful, dreamscape of strong female warriors and demonic beasts to Brooklyn's Gristle Gallery in her solo exhibition; True Cuts. “True Cuts” refers to the most vulnerable parts of us, the places where our insides creep out through the skin. The cut, or wound, has long been an important image in Grace’s work both for its immediate visual impact and its metaphoric possibilities. Instantly recognized, a cut is a tangible visual representation of experienced pain. The evolution of a wound into a scab into a scar has a clear parallel with the process of living through and healing from a difficult experience. Requiring time and care to heal properly, the scar is quite literally evidence of personal maturation. The internal forces its way out and the external world rebuilds the skin as best it can, leaving a piece of us forever altered. On our bodies and on our psyches, “True Cuts” are the most pure and cathartic memories we are forced to carry as we move forward. While combating the dark things inside us will never leave us unmarked, the battle is worthwhile and the resulting wounds can serve either to strengthen or weaken the armor we cultivate throughout our lives. Rather than viewing our personal demons as enemies, Grace views them as difficult aspects of our selves that, once confronted and understood, can be utilized for good. With each difficult experience, our armor grows and we become the warriors of our own worlds.

Scott Radke | ANTUMBRAE: A Book Of Art (1995-2015)

The creations of Cleveland based artist Scott Radke are magical and wondrous in every sense fathomable. Scott's works manifest from his subconscious visions and through mixed media sculpture, painting, and photography; we get a glimpse into the animal, nature, and human hybrid world they encompass. Like a daydream come to life, Scott's sculptures are melancholic and surreal in their presence, yet simultaneously invoke a comforting sense of hope and being. A true testament to not only the work itself, but to the artist who has fashioned them into existence as well.

Now after over two decades of immense work, Scott Radke and long-time friend Kasra Ghanbari (CEO and Co-Founder of 44FLOOD), are set to release through a Kickstarter fundraising campaign, ANTUMBRAE: A Book Of Art 1995-2015. Scott's first ever art book, a 10"x10", 144+ page, hardcover publication presenting 20 years of works with symbology and iconography based analysis.

Being an immensely huge admirer of Scott's work and this current project, I was thrilled at the opportunity for an interview and shed some light on this marvelous undertaking.

Ekaterina Panikanova, "Exercisi Di Memoria"
(Ink, watercolor, and graphite on aged books, mounted on birch, 53" x 59")

In 2007, legendary tattooist and artist, Paul Booth established Last Rights Gallery, and gave NYC a sanctuary for those with an affinity towards darker aesthetics. The new gallery will permit for an even more expansive scope into cultural and social avenues of contemporary art and will allow Paul to display works by an even broader selection of local and international artists.

Todd Lim, "David"
(Acrylic, oil and house paint with shoe lace on canvas, 86" x 55")

On November 14, 2015, Booth Gallery presents their inaugural group exhibition; "Second Sight". The show is conceived to venture into the unknown connection existing between information, perception and interpretation. Featured artists are: Chad Wys, Jesse Draxler, Ekaterina Panikanova, Ted Lawson, Jade Townsend, Johan Barrios, Mike Cockrill, Ryan Hewett, and Todd Lim. The art from each of these artists flows and weaves from one artwork to the other and creates a narrative where one is left to contemplate and question beyond the dialogue of our five senses and seek the connections we construct through memory and symbolism.

"MAGICA SEXUALIS" Group Exhibition at Stephen Romano Gallery

Rik Garrett

Stephen Romano Gallery is pleased to announce the next group exhibition following in the series of “In Missa Interfectionis”, “Opus Hypnagogia” (at Morbid Anatomy Museum) and the inaugural exhibition at Stephen Romano Gallery’s new Bushwick location “Lexicon Infernali”, all of which examine the interaction of the esoteric, vernacular, visionary, outsider, vintage and contemporary art practices. “Magica Sexualis” is the title of a book from 1934 which fascinates as a power object, and the work presented will examine sexual energy manifest through magic practice, or the reverse, magic energy manifest through sexual themes.

Sexual magic refers to an ancient science that has been known and protected by the purest, most spiritually advanced human beings, whose purpose and goal is the harnessing and perfection of our sexual forces. A more accurate translation of sexual magic would be “sexual priesthood.” In ancient times, the priest was always accompanied by a priestess, for they represent the divine forces at the base of all creation: the masculine and feminine, the Yab-Yum, Ying-Yang, Father Mother: the Elohim.

Sex magic (sex magick) is any type of sexual activity used in magical, ritualistic or otherwise religious and spiritual pursuits. One practice of sex magic is using the energy of sexual arousal or orgasm with visualization of a desired result. A premise of sex magic is the concept that sexual energy is a potent force that can be harnessed to transcend one’s normally perceived reality.

Mattheew Dutton | Fauna Gomorrah
The Morbid Anatomy Museum presents Opus Hypnagogia: Sacred Spaces of the Visionary and Vernacular, a new exhibition, curated by Stephen Romano. The show's title is inspired by the hypnagogic state, the transitional world between the waking and dreaming planes of consciousness - a space where it is believed creativity flourishes and manifests into existence. The exhibit is a harmonious pairing of contemporary artworks alongside a vast array of ephemera, vernacular photography, folk sculptures, and sacred ancient texts is executed immaculately. An innovative and esoteric testament to the shamanic state and the otherworldly creative process that enlightens an artist's path from vision to conception. With astonishing works by such artists as Kris Kuksi, Charles Dellschau , Martin Wittfooth, William Mortenson, El Gato Chimney, Jel Ena, Caitlin McCormack, and many, many more - this show is a must see and will leave you walking away altered and entranced.
