There is a realm that is known to artists. It is a realm where night is luminous. Where forgetting is powerful. A place where all must lose their way —
Destiny + Amnesia = DESTINESIA .
Destiny + Amnesia = DESTINESIA .
We lose ourselves to find ourselves.
We peer through a lens; commit brush to canvas; juxtapose images--here the work is fierce and exuberant. We extend the boundaries of self. We stare down oblivion.

Destinesia is a hypnagogic state, bordering on sleep, rich in theta
waves, where dreams and reality mix. Here, we make contact with the
creative spirit and converse with the elusive muse. Here, we find the
courage to create.
Destinesia is the realm of daydreams. Here, we let go. Shatter the routine. Question. Spark. Illuminate. Answer. Here, we have epiphanies. Lose our self-consciousness. Risk it all. Here, everything breaks apart and snaps together. Here, we delve in the dark. Here, we light-up like neon. Here, we are in love with anarchy. Here, we are free.
In Destinesia, we forget to remember. What is created lives forever. The mystery is deepened.

"MAGICA SEXUALIS" Group Exhibition at Stephen Romano Gallery
![]() |
| Rik Garrett |
Stephen Romano Gallery is pleased to announce the next group exhibition following in the series of “In Missa Interfectionis”, “Opus Hypnagogia” (at Morbid Anatomy Museum) and the inaugural exhibition at Stephen Romano Gallery’s new Bushwick location “Lexicon Infernali”, all of which examine the interaction of the esoteric, vernacular, visionary, outsider, vintage and contemporary art practices. “Magica Sexualis” is the title of a book from 1934 which fascinates as a power object, and the work presented will examine sexual energy manifest through magic practice, or the reverse, magic energy manifest through sexual themes.
Sexual magic refers to an ancient science that has been known and protected by the purest, most spiritually advanced human beings, whose purpose and goal is the harnessing and perfection of our sexual forces. A more accurate translation of sexual magic would be “sexual priesthood.” In ancient times, the priest was always accompanied by a priestess, for they represent the divine forces at the base of all creation: the masculine and feminine, the Yab-Yum, Ying-Yang, Father Mother: the Elohim.
Sex magic (sex magick) is any type of sexual activity used in magical, ritualistic or otherwise religious and spiritual pursuits. One practice of sex magic is using the energy of sexual arousal or orgasm with visualization of a desired result. A premise of sex magic is the concept that sexual energy is a potent force that can be harnessed to transcend one’s normally perceived reality.

The Morbid Anatomy Museum presents Opus Hypnagogia: Sacred Spaces of the
Visionary and Vernacular, a new exhibition, curated by Stephen Romano. The show's title is inspired by the hypnagogic state, the transitional world
between the waking and dreaming planes of consciousness - a space where it is believed creativity
flourishes and manifests into existence. The exhibit is a harmonious pairing of contemporary artworks
alongside a vast array of ephemera, vernacular photography, folk sculptures,
and sacred ancient texts is executed immaculately. An innovative
and esoteric testament to the shamanic state and the otherworldly creative
process that enlightens an artist's path from vision to conception. With
astonishing works by such artists as Kris Kuksi, Charles Dellschau , Martin
Wittfooth, William Mortenson, El Gato Chimney, Jel Ena, Caitlin McCormack, and
many, many more - this show is a must see and will leave you walking away
altered and entranced.
Rik Garrett "Earth Magic" and Lu Zhang "All Lost Souls" at Stephen Romano Gallery

“With Earth Magic I’ve envisioned a
matristic, nature-based world; a female-centric, ritualistic community
completely apart from the rest of society. This is a history of
“witchcraft” devoid of “witch hunts”, a race of women who draw their
energy and inspiration from the Earth itself. What if there were a truth
to the myths of Amazons and the books like Aradia, Gospel of the
Witches? What if the fierce Maenads of Greek mythology still existed
today, hidden from view? What if these truths were presented
faithfully?” - Rik Garrett
Chinese artist Lu Zhang. Lu's photographic
and video performance works are based on her nostalgia and longing for
the covert shamanic practices of her homeworld, which she uses to
exorcise herself of unwanted excess emotional attachments and baggage.
Lu Zhang will be presenting a series of photographic and video works
entitled "All The Lost Souls" which is an attempt to conjure through
memory, ritual, unleashing of sexual energies as well as through a
detachment from all thing that bind us to our past (such as home,
family, relations) the spirits that dwell in the landscape of our
ecosystem as well as the spirits of the inner landscape.

"I am interested in disclosure universal human nature through
investigating the relationship, the cultural conflicts and the curiosity
of spiritual existence, both politically and personally. I photograph
and videotape myself as an object, and reveal hopes out of the
traumatized relationships and experiences. My work becomes a dreamland
where I can accept the reality. In the Birth of Tragedy, Nietzsche is
saying, the world is full of tragedy. Art is the only thing can save
people." - Lu Zhang

William Mortensen: American Grotesque at Stephen Romano Gallery
Legendary, black and white landscape photographer, Ansel Adams, called photographer William Mortensen "the anti-Christ" and "the Devil" for his unorthodox heretical take on the art of photography. Whereas Adams was a "straight-laced" realist in his approach to camera work; Mortensen's Pictorial style of shooting was heavily founded in his background as a painter and illustrator, manipulating photographs to fabricate romantic and surreal imagery otherwise impossible. Habitually, he would razorblade-scratch, pencil-mark, and employ unique screen-texture methods to add a more illustrative element to his work. In truth, before there was Photoshop, there was Mortenson.
Though Mortensen, through a chance meeting with director Cecil B. DeMille, began his photographic
career taking studio portraits of Hollywood actors and actresses like the 1933 sweetheart
of King Kong, Fay Wray, his works
shifted to a more darker, cinematic narrative that not only challenged the
methods of photography, but of that of its content as well. Mortenson shot
dreamlike stills so expressive it told an entire story in a single frame.
"A
Pictorial Compendium of Witchcraft"; a tremendous occult driven photo
series that was once thought to never exist until they were recently unearthed,
as well as other hauntingly beautiful works by Mortenson are nearing its final
show dates at the spectacular The Stephen Romano Gallery exhibition William Mortensen: American Grotesque,
running through November 30, 2014. Like other forgotten and scorned geniuses
of years past such as Nicholas Tesla,
William Mortenson has finally begun to receive the acclamation he and his pioneering
works have long been owed.

The Dark Fashion Photography of Stefan Gesell
Germany based photographer Stefan Gesell tells his haunting yet beautiful narrative through lens and digital manipulation. Bedside table sketches and scribbled notes get reinterpreted into visions H.R. Giger and major couture houses would both be proud of.
Ransom & Mitchell - CineMagic Photography
Ransom & Mitchell is a San Francisco based fine art, still & motion creative team consisting of director-photographer Jason Mitchell and set designer-photo illustrator Stacey Ransom. Together these two artists create vastly meticulous photographic portraits and exquisite scenarios. Through a matchless mixture of cinematic lighting, sensationally designed sets invoke the master painters of yore and create a dark world that simply cannot exist, but impractically does. To create a stationary object that moves the mind and soul and screams of a vast dialogue running in motion, is true artistic genius. These are the people I admire; the ones who don't simply see things, but envision and create them.

Larissa Kulik - Surreal Photo Manipulation
Larissa Kulik is a highly imaginative photographer and digital artist based out of the small town Ostrov, in Russia. Larissa's love for taking and editing photos into the reality she has envisioned is truly remarkable. Her gift of creating hyper-surreal imagery with a fantasy and Gothic edged tonality is her true secret.

Elena Vizerskaya - The Metaphysical Art of KaSSandrA
Kiev, Ukraine based photographer and
digital artist Elena Vizerskaya aka KaSSandrA is a dream-weaver extraordinaire.
Much like her Greek mythological namesake, Elena envisions reality with the
metaphysical, intertwining both together in a seamless cohesion. Though much
about KaSSandrA is still enigmatic, the future holds many things for this
bright blossoming visionary.
